Meet the Midwife

Bio

Dorothy Bauman, CPM is a Certified Professional Midwife with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) currently practicing as a Traditional Midwife in the state of Ohio.  During her midwifery training that began in 2018, Dorothy became certified through DONA International (Doulas of North America) as a Certified Birth Doula.  Dorothy completed the PEP Process through NARM, obtaining her CPM credential in 2024.  She is currently working on her Post-Graduate International Midwifery Diploma with Mercy In Action college of Midwifery.  Dorothy holds current certificates in CPR (BLS) and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program).  Additionally she has taken multiple in-person training courses beyond requirements, a few being: BEST (Birth Emergency Skills Training), International First Aid and Fire Response course, Midwifery Led Newborn Resuscitation and Transport course by Midwives Untethered, POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound training for Midwives), Ancient Arts Midwifery Skills training, Breech Without Borders, Spinning Babies course, and more.  In the Summer of 2024, Dorothy became a NARM Registered & International Registered Preceptor for students who are going for their CPM or CIM credentials.

As a past-time, Dorothy raised and hand-milked dairy goats, her "babies".  Dorothy invested much effort into producing top-of-the-line generations of the LaMancha breed for optimal milk production.  Having a draw towards veterinary work specific for goats and sheep, Dorothy chose instead to dedicate her time and skill to the greater matters of life in service to mothers and babies.  With 8 sisters and a brother, she finds great delight in God's nature, music, art, and enjoys precious family time.

Dorothy is passionate in her work to improve maternity care & birth outcomes and to give women opportunity to discover their God-given strengths, leading a gentle and peaceful birth experience with minimal interventions.  Dorothy considers midwifery her ministry.  Her faith in God is the leading factor in her care for families, practicing with an evidence-based approach.  Dorothy deeply loves helping mothers at home in Ohio, but has also given her time for those unique requests from women in other areas, traveling to Canada and to Europe to attend home births.  Dorothy served at a Russian Mennonite clinic in Southern Mexico as the head Midwife for more than a year and a half, which has been a great asset to her knowledge, experience and skill.

Dorothy's experience in Mexico has opened up new avenues of skill in various areas, bringing on new opportunities.  Dorothy is trained in breech and twin birth through Breech Without Borders and Breech & Twin Essentials with Dr Hayes, and regularly updates her skills.  Dorothy is experienced and supportive of other "high-risk" cases including VBACs within a reasonable and agreeable range, weighing each individual situation uniquely.

It is important to me that every woman I serve is empowered and educated to make informed choices for herself and her baby. It is important that we can trust one another as a working team. It is my greatest privilege to walk away from a birth or exam, knowing you are fully satisfied with your care.

What parents are saying...

Dependable, thorough in work, and intentional in service… Receiving the care from Dorothy made our first pregnancy a beautiful experience. Dorothy is a great guide and educator of the whole pregnancy journey. Her care is specific to mama and baby. It always made me feel confident as well as motivated to do my best for baby's sake. Dorthy is willing to go the extra mile. I wish for all women to experience the intentional support, undivided attention and professional care in their pregnancy journey as I did.

We have used Dorothy for two of our births now. My very first impression of her was "wow, she's young". But I am glad that first impression did not scare me away because she is the most knowledgeable midwife I have ever met. She is Better than any doctor or OB/GYN when it comes to knowledge, patience & caring for your health. Every issue I ever had with pregnancy, labor, after birth or baby she was able to answer it and take care of the problem. You will not be disappointed, having her as your midwife! She is a true blessing in my life. Thank you Dorothy, we love you!

I can't say enough positive things about Dorothy. She delivered my first son and assisted with my second son. Dorothy brought a calmness and a peace that only certain people can. I'm thankful for her knowledge of different positions to help with the baby's position. I would recommend Dorothy to anyone who would love to have a calm successful birthing experience.

I could go on and on about Dorothy! She is extremely knowledgeable and also incredibly kind. She also has an air of confidence and decisiveness that I appreciate in a provider! She is always available for all of my questions. She definitely uses a holistic approach to her care and I hope that I can have her for many many more births to come. She is amazing. I recommend her to everyone!

Dorothy delivered our 4th child. This was our first home birth, my wife has 2 c sections followed by a hospital VBAC before we had our 4th at home. She was great! I work in healthcare and was nervous about having a baby at home. She was very competent and professional. Knew exactly what she was doing and provided great care and insight. We would certainly recommend care with Dorothy!

We are so glad that Dorothy was our doula. She did so much to help us be prepared for and make the most of the birthing process. We desired a natural birth with minimal interventions and Dorothy fully supported us in that. She lent us quality resources and discussed with us what this might look like. Whenever I contacted Dorothy, she responded promptly and when we called to tell her we were in labor, she came right away. During labor and delivery, she was always there supporting me emotionally and physically. I definitely wouldn't have had such a positive experience without her. It has been a blessing having her support.

Dorothy was absolutely amazing from beginning to end of both the pregnancy and delivery. She was always available to answer any question I had and was so very understanding of me having severe HG during my pregnancy.  At the birth she kept me updated on what was occurring or being asked of me when I was too tired or focused to fully comprehend and helped voice my wants and needs throughout. She also helped my husband stay engaged and offered suggestions on how he could help when he was overwhelmed or unsure what to do for me and was just a wonderful guide to have in the room. If I have anymore children in the future I will definitely seek her services again!

I connected with and hired Dorothy at 36 weeks with a breech baby, meeting her in person for a procedure the day before I delivered. At that time, my goal was to find someone to come to the hospital with me to attempt to flip the baby, as well as to be available for labor and delivery there. I hoped to find someone who could advocate for me but that also shared my faith and understood my wishes for a calm and peaceful environment.  Dorothy is incredibly easy to communicate with in text and in person, and has a wonderful balance of knowledge, passion, and wisdom. I was able to comfortably confide in her and receive honest and unbiased advice. She was professional with my medical team in the hospital, yet I felt like I was talking to a friend as she explained and reassured me of my options, being completely respectful of my choices.  Dorothy shared her training with breech deliveries and that there are midwives that absolutely would help me. She immediately made calls on my behalf!  I went into labor that very next day, but truly believed I was in incredible pain from the failed version. I texted Dorothy as I felt my body was just shutting down. She arrived and kept me breathing, calm and hydrated when I was on the edge of giving up. She massaged me through the incredible pain of my contractions, and gently reminded me what my body was designed to do. She cheered me on as I progressed in labor. Dorothy knew what she was doing, especially with breech and I am beyond grateful!  I had given up on many of my desires for birth, but all of these were fulfilled including: being in the the comfort of my home, fewer checks and interventions, eating and drinking during labor, immediate skin to skin and breastfeeding, saving the placenta for encapsulation, delayed cord cutting, and especially not being separated from my older children who would be unable to visit in the hospital due to COVID guidelines.
